Deuteronomy 5:23Sefaria

The encounter at Mount Sinai brought the Israelites face to face with an overwhelming spiritual reality that ordinary humans can barely contain. Filled with fear and wonder, they recognize the profound miracle of surviving a direct revelation from God. Yet, they also understand that they cannot sustain this unnatural, miraculous state.

There is a vast divide between the physical and the spiritual. The Israelites acknowledge their physical nature, recognizing that they are deeply tied to the material world and cannot remain detached from their physical bodies for long. This stands in sharp contrast to Moses, who managed to elevate himself to a pure, high spiritual level and maintain a state of separation from physical desires Because human beings are bound by physical limitations and are not naturally equipped for such an intense level of prophecy, surviving this encounter defies the laws of nature. The Israelites realize that God does not perform ongoing, unnecessary miracles simply to keep them alive in this elevated state [מלבי״ם].

The Israelites specifically identify the source of the revelation to avoid any confusion with angels, judges, or celestial forces. They emphasize that the voice belongs to the living Creator who acts independently, completely distinct from the heavenly hosts Another perspective suggests that because God is the ultimate source of life, hearing His voice causes a person's soul to naturally yearn to reconnect with its divine root. This profound yearning urges the soul to abandon the physical body and leave this world entirely

Surviving such an encounter is an unprecedented wonder that fills the Israelites with deep gratitude [ביאור יש״ר]. However, their survival was far from a state of total health and stability. While Moses could listen to God with a calm mind and without suffering harm, the rest of the nation was struck with intense physical weakness, severe anxiety, and a complete shutdown of their physical senses, a state they felt was on the brink of death [הכתב והקבלה]. They managed to survive this first encounter only because the sheer terror of the event temporarily purified their physical bodies. Knowing they could never endure such an experience a second time, they accept their human limitations and ask Moses to serve as their messenger and intermediary with God from that moment forward
