וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֨ אֶת־הַמִּצְוָ֜ה וְאֶת־הַֽחֻקִּ֣ים וְאֶת־הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֧י מְצַוְּךָ֛ הַיּ֖וֹם לַעֲשׂוֹתָֽם׃ {פ}

The relationship between God and His people rests heavily on a foundation of mutual commitment. Because God faithfully maintains His covenant and extends kindness to Israel, a parallel duty falls upon humanity to keep His instructions [אבן עזרא, הטור הארוך, ביאור יש״ר, חזקוני]. Fulfilling this obligation ensures that a person is counted among those who truly love God, ultimately leading to a life filled with goodness and success [הטור הארוך, רלב״ג].

Engaging with these laws and statutes serves a profound spiritual purpose. It acts as a protective shield against negative inclinations and the pull of idolatry [העמק דבר]. Fulfilling these duties involves more than just the physical performance of actions at the right time; it requires establishing the law firmly and dedicating oneself to diligent study [העמק דבר]. Furthermore, these divine instructions must be received and carried out with awe and reverence, much like reading a royal decree directly from a king. Yet, this reverence is balanced with a deep sense of closeness and confidence that God actively listens to the prayers of Israel [רשב״ם].

A central focus of this duty is the urgency of the present moment. The requirement to act is firmly anchored to the concept of today [מזרחי, שפתי חכמים, גור אריה, משכיל לדוד, תורה תמימה]. The primary approach among commentators views this as a clear division of time. The current world is the present day meant for action, while the World to Come is the tomorrow designated for receiving reward [רש״י, רבנו בחיי, תורה תמימה, צאינה וראינה, שפתי כהן]. The present life is compared to the eve of the Sabbath, a time when a person must work and prepare while they still have the strength. Once a person passes away, they are free from these obligations and can no longer act or make corrections.

Because of this clear division, a person should not feel troubled or disappointed if they do not see the immediate rewards of their hard work in this world [ספורנו]. In fact, the concealment of the reward is entirely intentional. If consequences and benefits were handed out immediately, human free will would be completely erased, reducing obedience to mere self-interest and fear. Delaying the reward to the World to Come allows a person to act out of pure love for God rather than a desire for a quick payoff [מלבי״ם]. Therefore, one should eagerly and joyfully fulfill these responsibilities without trying to calculate which duty is minor and which is severe, knowing that the true value of the reward remains hidden and preserved for the future [רבנו בחיי].
