יחזקאל, פרק י׳, פסוק י״ח

The departure of the Divine Presence from the Temple is a step-by-step journey leading to the ultimate destruction. Previously, the glory of God moved from its inner resting place to the doorway of the building. Now, the departure advances further as God's presence leaves the threshold of the Temple, the place where it had temporarily paused [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This movement represents a further withdrawal of Divine protection and guidance from the sanctuary that is about to be destroyed [מלבי״ם].

God's glory then moves to stand above the cherubim, which act as a chariot for Him [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This transition from the doorway to the cherubim carries a deep message about how God will guide the people of Israel. As God leaves the Temple to join the people in their exile, His method of leadership changes from clear, open guidance to hidden involvement. Moving forward, His direction will be disguised, managing the world through hidden miracles woven into the regular laws of nature. Because of this shift, the prophetic vision will eventually show the cherubim turning into living creatures, which symbolize the natural order of the world. Yet, they truly remain the exact same cherubim, constantly working under the direct and personal care of the God of Israel [מלבי״ם].
