וּמֵרָאשֵׁי֙ הָֽאָב֔וֹת בְּבוֹאָ֕ם לְבֵ֥ית יְהֹוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּירוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם הִֽתְנַדְּבוּ֙ לְבֵ֣ית הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים לְהַעֲמִיד֖וֹ עַל־מְכוֹנֽוֹ׃

Returning from exile, the people arrived in the land of Israel and were met with the ruins of the Temple. Their immediate reaction was a generous effort to fund its reconstruction. Even so, not every family leader was able to contribute [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The years of exile had taken a heavy toll, leaving a portion of the returnees impoverished and simply without the financial means to offer a voluntary gift [חומת אנך].

Because the sanctuary was completely destroyed at the time, the concept of arriving at the holy house is understood in a few different ways. The primary approach among commentators is that the people simply reached the physical, ruined location where the building once stood. Another perspective suggests that their journey was driven by a specific purpose, meaning they traveled entirely for the sake of the site [אבן עזרא]. Alternatively, the joy of the return was so great that the people did not even wait to reach Jerusalem. They committed their funds and volunteered their gifts while still traveling on the road [חומת אנך, רש״י].

As they directed their hearts toward the Temple, the people recognized different aspects of God's relationship with them. While focusing on these different aspects can simply be seen as a way to emphasize their ultimate destination [מצודת דוד], it also reflects a profound spiritual transition. They recognized the attribute of strict justice, which had originally decreed their exile and left them in poverty. Yet, they also perceived a clear shift toward divine mercy. The returnees gave their donations with a deep sense of trust, confident that God would now treat them with compassion as they came back home [חומת אנך].

The ultimate goal of this financial effort was to restore the sanctuary exactly as it was. The returnees intended to rebuild the structure precisely upon the original base and foundation that had been prepared there from the very beginning [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון], ensuring the new building followed the exact original plan of the holy site [רס״ג].
