פרשת וישב

Genesis 39:18Sefaria

Potiphar's wife presents a carefully crafted lie to her husband, framing Joseph for an assault that never happened. This false testimony is not a spontaneous act of malice, but a desperate move to cover her tracks. She is forced to present this fabricated version of events because she had already involved the household staff. By making the incident public earlier to establish her own innocence, she backed herself into a corner and had no choice but to follow through with a formal complaint to Joseph's master. Had she not called the servants, she would have preferred to keep the entire matter quiet. This was especially true after a few hours had passed and she realized that Joseph had not gone to the market to spread rumors about her [העמק דבר].

When recounting the event, her description is highly calculated. She does not claim to have screamed in terror, as it would be unnatural to cry out bitterly over a mere display of disrespect. Instead, she frames the event as though she simply raised her voice to scold Joseph. Immediately following this reprimand, she called for the members of the household so they could join her in scolding him [העמק דבר].

She then has to explain the most incriminating piece of evidence: why Joseph's garment remained in her possession. She claims that Joseph had already removed his clothing with the intention of lying with her, but the moment she raised her voice, he panicked, left his garment behind, and ran [שד״ל]. She describes his escape not as a frantic flight into the public street, but merely as him slipping out of the room to avoid her continued scolding [העמק דבר].
