Genesis 39:5Sefaria

The presence of a righteous person possesses the profound ability to transform the reality around them. As Joseph demonstrates his personal skills and success, his influence expands, radiating outward to his foreign environment until his master recognizes that divine blessing rests upon his home solely due to his servant. This elevation in status occurs through a gradual progression of authority Initially responsible only for his own tasks, Joseph is promoted to serve as his master's personal attendant. He is then appointed as the manager over the entire household, commanding the other servants, and ultimately becomes the guardian of his master's entire wealth and property [אברבנאל]. This final appointment represents a complete handover of affairs for his supervision and care [רש ר הירש]. God's blessing takes effect the very moment Joseph assumes his role, manifesting so tangibly that his master notices it immediately

The resulting abundance encompasses every facet of the Egyptian's life. It extends to his family members [העמק דבר], as well as his money and physical possessions [רבנו בחיי]. The blessing covers both private assets and official state duties, including tax collection [העמק דבר], and even applies retroactively to property the master owned long before Joseph arrived [מלבי״ם]. This prosperity permeates both the household expenses and the agricultural income generated from crops and plantings Strikingly, the divine favor reaches places and businesses that Joseph never physically visits; it is enough that he directs others to manage them from afar

The catalyst for this extraordinary prosperity is entirely Joseph himself, who acts as the central axis in a cycle of cause and effect that draws down the blessing [רש ר הירש]. Although the Egyptian household may not have been inherently worthy of such grace, it is blessed simply because it is now considered Joseph's domain [מלבי״ם]. This illustrates a broader spiritual principle: God protects the righteous, and those who associate with them, even the wicked, can be sustained by their merit. Furthermore, as a Torah scholar, Joseph's presence brings abundance to the home in the same way the Ark of the Covenant brought blessing to the house of Oved-Edom Yet, there is a distinct irony in this situation: while Joseph channels immense blessing to others, he remains unable to secure his own freedom from captivity [שפתי כהן].

Joseph's success is deeply rooted in his personal conduct. He operates with absolute integrity, entirely avoiding the deceit common among merchants, because he constantly keeps God before his eyes [אברבנאל]. Furthermore, burdened by sadness over the separation from his father, he chooses to remain in his master's house rather than attend feasts and celebrations with friends. This unwavering dedication significantly accelerates his promotion [כלי יקר]. The spatial descriptions of his success indoors and outdoors also serve as markers of time, indicating a period of one year spent in the master's service—six months of winter indoors, and six months of summer in the fields—before he is sent to prison for twelve years. Witnessing this continuous, undeniable success, his master eventually ceases demanding any accounting of his actions, granting Joseph absolute trust

Ultimately, however, this very success sets the stage for a profound challenge. It is Joseph's spiritual and practical accomplishments that initially captivate his master's wife. His physical beauty only amplifies this initial impression later on, making the moral test he is about to face significantly more complex [רש ר הירש].
