וְעַתָּ֛ה אֲגַלֶּ֥ה אֶת־נַבְלֻתָ֖הּ לְעֵינֵ֣י מְאַהֲבֶ֑יהָ וְאִ֖ישׁ לֹא־יַצִּילֶ֥נָּה מִיָּדִֽי׃

The withdrawal of Divine providence strips away all protection, leaving a nation completely vulnerable and exposing the absolute helplessness of the forces it once trusted. When God removes His kindness, reality shifts drastically. Without His shelter, the nation's moral ugliness and evil deeds are suddenly laid bare [רד״ק, צאינה וראינה]. This exposed state is deeply shameful and disgraceful [אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. Stripped of her dignity, the nation becomes repulsive. Much like an unfaithful woman whose shame is publicly uncovered, she is met with disgust and swiftly abandoned by the very ones she sought to attract [אברבנאל].

This sudden downfall, along with the loss of all wealth and abundance, happens openly in front of her supposed lovers [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators identifies these lovers not as people, but as the forces of nature, the heavenly systems, the stars, or the governing angels [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל], while some point specifically to the sun [רד״ק בשם אביו]. The public nature of this punishment serves a clear purpose: to prove that these higher powers have no independent strength against God. Even if the natural and heavenly systems align in the nation's favor, they are entirely powerless. Without God's will, they can neither grant new blessings nor preserve the good the nation already holds [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

Ultimately, a painful truth emerges. These natural forces never truly desired the nation's well-being, and she devoted herself to them in vain without receiving anything in return [שטיינזלץ]. Adding to this profound isolation is the reality that absolutely no one can save her from God's hand. Not only do the forces of nature stand by helplessly, but even the spiritual protections of the past have faded. The historical merit of the forefathers is exhausted and can no longer shield the people from the impending judgment [רש״י, רד״ק].
