II Chronicles 4:3Sefaria

A magnificent and complex design characterized the massive copper pool that stood in Solomon's Temple. The bottom of this enormous basin was adorned with unique shapes, blending precise engineering with impressive artistry. These decorations were situated beneath the rim or along the bottom of the pool itself [רד״ק]. Commentators offer different perspectives on their exact function. They may have served as the actual base upon which the entire structure stood [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ], or they might have been purely decorative figures adorning the lower section without supporting the weight [רד״ק].

A parallel account in the Book of Kings describes these decorations as round, ornamental bumps. To resolve the differing descriptions, some explain that these round bumps were specifically shaped to look like the heads of oxen [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective suggests that while the main bodies of these figures were round like an egg, their faces were crafted to resemble oxen [רד״ק].

The dimensions of these decorations raise an engineering question, as they are described as spanning ten cubits. The primary approach among commentators resolves this by explaining that the structure's height was divided into two distinct sections. The lower three cubits formed a square base, while the upper two cubits were perfectly round. Therefore, the measurement of ten cubits does not refer to a circular circumference, but rather to the length of each of the four sides of the square base where the oxen shapes surrounded the pool.

These ox figures were arranged in two distinct rows. They either encircled the pool with one row stacked directly above the other [מצודת דוד], or they were positioned with one row at the front of the structure and the other at the back [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Regardless of their exact arrangement, the decorations were not crafted separately and attached later with nails or adhesives. Instead, the oxen and the massive pool were melted and cast together as a single, seamless unit [רד״ק].
