Ignoring clear warnings and driven by excessive pride, the kingdoms of Israel and Judah engage in a direct and devastating confrontation. Amaziah, king of Judah, stubbornly refuses good advice to avoid conflict. Consequently, the two monarchs meet in an organized, formal battle [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The clash does not take place on neutral ground, but rather at Beth-shemesh, deep within the territory of Judah. Although the location of this city is well known, its association with Judah is emphasized to highlight the extreme self-confidence of Jehoash, king of Israel. Absolutely certain of his victory, Jehoash does not wait for Amaziah to advance. Instead, he launches an offensive strike, aggressively invading Judah's borders to engage his rival on his own soil [רד״ק, רלב״ג].
The deeper cause of Amaziah's catastrophic downfall is rooted in his spiritual failures, despite his early years of doing what was right in the eyes of God. Following a military triumph over the Edomites, Amaziah brought back their foreign gods, bowed down to them, and openly ignored the warnings of a prophet sent by God. In doing so, he mirrored the tragic trajectory of his father, who also began his reign with righteousness but ultimately fell into idolatry [אברבנאל]. While the Book of Kings largely omits the details of this sin, focusing instead on the primary political events and the timeline of his reign, the complete spiritual background that led to this divine punishment is recorded in the Book of Chronicles [אברבנאל].
The consequences of the battle are severe. The army of Judah is completely defeated, and Amaziah is taken captive and brought back to his own capital, Jerusalem. There, Jehoash breaches a massive hole in the city's protective wall. This act is not one of random destruction, but rather a calculated display of triumph and dominance. Following the custom of great ancient emperors who refused to use standard city gates after a monumental victory, Jehoash prefers to tear down a section of the wall and enter through the breach. This grand entrance broadcasts his absolute power and total control over the captive king of Judah [אברבנאל]. To finalize his conquest, Jehoash empties the treasures from both the House of God and the royal palace. He then returns to Samaria, taking with him the sons of high-ranking ministers as hostages to guarantee that Judah will not rebel against him again [אברבנאל].
