II Kings 3:1Sefaria

The rise of a new king in Israel marks more than just a political shift; it sets the stage for sweeping prophetic events and military campaigns. The coronation of Jehoram serves as the backdrop for a crucial transition in spiritual leadership and an impending regional war. Placing the beginning of Jehoram's rule at this specific moment acts as a prelude to the extraordinary acts of the prophet Elisha, who had just succeeded his master, Elijah. The timeline of these events is deeply intertwined, as the start of Jehoram's reign occurred exactly as Elijah departed and Elisha arrived in Samaria, right before the outbreak of conflict [מלבי״ם].

The story of the new king quickly leads into a joint military campaign undertaken by the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom against the king of Moab. During this war, Elisha brings about a massive miracle of salvation [רש״י, אברבנאל]. This specific event joins a total of sixteen miracles performed by Elisha throughout his life. This number is exactly double the eight miracles performed by Elijah, fulfilling Elisha’s earlier request to inherit a double portion of his master’s spirit [רש״י].

Beyond the historical and prophetic drama, the timeline of these royal successions requires careful calculation. When aligning the new king's rise with the ongoing reign of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, the timeline indicates that Jehoshaphat's eighteenth year in power had already fully concluded. Jehoram actually took the throne at the very beginning of the nineteenth year [מצודת דוד]. This precise tracking of time reveals that Jehoram’s predecessor, Ahaziah, did not rule for two complete years, but rather for partial, fragmented years [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. In the same way, the twelve-year span of Jehoram’s own rule consists of partial years rather than full, unbroken calendar years [מצודת דוד].
