וַיֹּ֘אמֶר֮ נַעֲמָן֒ וָלֹ֕א יֻתַּן־נָ֣א לְעַבְדְּךָ֔ מַשָּׂ֥א צֶמֶד־פְּרָדִ֖ים אֲדָמָ֑ה כִּ֡י לֽוֹא־יַעֲשֶׂה֩ ע֨וֹד עַבְדְּךָ֜ עֹלָ֤ה וָזֶ֙בַח֙ לֵאלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים כִּ֖י אִם־לַיהֹוָֽה׃

After a prophet refuses his gift, a powerful foreign commander undergoes a deep spiritual transformation. Having discovered the God of Israel, he seeks a physical connection to his new faith to carry back to his homeland, preparing to make a complete break from his idolatrous past.

The primary approach among commentators is that his opening words serve as a humble plea [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. However, others view his request as a direct response to the prophet's refusal to accept a reward. In this interpretation, the commander reasons that if the prophet will not take a gift for the healing, he should at least grant him a way to properly worship God [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To establish this connection, he asks for as much earth as a pair of mules can carry [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. His goal is to transport this soil back to his city and construct an altar from it [רש״י, רלב״ג, רד״ק]. He specifically requests earth from this location because the land of Israel is holy [רש״י], recognizing that offering proper sacrifices to God requires pure soil [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Some note that he desired the exact earth from the spot where the prophet stood or from his home [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג].

It might seem unusual that a powerful military leader would ask permission to take something as common as dirt, which he could easily take on his own. He insists on asking to avoid any trace of theft. By securing explicit permission from the prophet and the king of Israel, he ensures that his future altar to God is not built upon stolen ground [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה].

He concludes his request by fully accepting the authority of God. He makes a firm commitment that moving forward, he will offer sacrifices exclusively to Him, completely abandoning all forms of idol worship [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].
