וַתִּקְרָ֛א אִשָּׁ֥ה חֲכָמָ֖ה מִן־הָעִ֑יר שִׁמְע֤וּ שִׁמְעוּ֙ אִמְרוּ־נָ֣א אֶל־יוֹאָ֔ב קְרַ֣ב עַד־הֵ֔נָּה וַאֲדַבְּרָ֖ה אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

In the middle of a tense military siege, just moments before a city is destroyed, a lone female figure steps forward to halt the advancing forces and save her home.

Her identity is a subject of discussion among commentators. The simplest approach views her as a local resident who did not support the rebel hiding within the city [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, another tradition identifies her as Serah the daughter of Asher, the historical figure who originally told Jacob that Joseph was still alive. According to this view, she lived for hundreds of years to reach this very moment, stepping forward to rebuke the military commander, Joab. She accused him of violating Torah law by failing to offer peace terms before launching the siege—a law she claimed to have heard directly from Moses [רד״ק, חומת אנך, אברבנאל]. Still, some commentators struggle to accept the miracle of such an unnaturally long life, spanning all the way from the Israelites' descent into Egypt until the reign of King David [אברבנאל בשם רד״ק].

The fact that a woman, rather than a man, approached the wall to speak with the commander is rooted in the harsh realities of the battlefield. Had a man appeared on the wall, the besieging soldiers likely would have perceived him as an immediate threat and shot him with arrows. A woman, however, was exempt from warfare. Perceived as a non-combatant and a seeker of peace, she could safely approach the wall to initiate negotiations [אברבנאל].

Shouting over the noise of the battlefield, her repeated cries for the soldiers to listen reflect a sense of panic and extreme urgency [מצודת דוד]. She asks the troops to pass a message to their commander, requesting that he step closer to the wall. By speaking with him face to face, she hopes to negotiate an end to the conflict and prevent the impending destruction [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
