The survival and continuation of the Davidic royal line rests entirely on a single condition: a deep, unwavering commitment to following God's path and keeping His commandments [מלבי״ם]. This requirement goes beyond outward obedience, demanding a profound internal dedication.
Living a life dedicated to God requires acting with a complete and undivided heart [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Every action must stem from pure intentions, free from any hidden personal motives or external pressures [מלבי״ם]. Alongside this pure motivation, there must also be an internal honesty. True uprightness is rooted in the mind, requiring a person's core beliefs and opinions to be genuinely aligned with truth [מלבי״ם].
The responsibility to follow God's laws is divided into two distinct areas of practice [מלבי״ם]. First, there is a call for active engagement. This involves the positive commandments, which demand physical action and initiative to carry out what God requires. Second, there is a requirement for restraint. The expectation to guard God's laws refers specifically to the negative commandments. In this area, obedience is achieved through avoidance, by holding back and consciously choosing not to perform forbidden actions.
