A dramatic moment of recognition unfolds between a pursuing king and the hunted man who has just spared his life. Saul instantly identifies the voice calling out to him. This immediate recognition stands in sharp contrast to the reaction of Abner, the army commander, who had heard the calls moments earlier but failed to identify the speaker entirely [אברבנאל]. The shouts echoing through the night also rouse other men in the camp from their sleep [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Since Saul clearly recognizes who is speaking, his inquiry asking if it is indeed David calling seems unnecessary. However, this is not a simple request for identification, but a profound question about their relationship. In his earlier shouts to Abner and the soldiers, David referred to the king as their lord, carefully avoiding calling him his own lord. Noticing this subtle shift, Saul wonders aloud if David no longer considers him his master [אלשיך]. Despite sensing this distance, Saul responds with warmth and affection, addressing him as his son. This endearing greeting stems from deep gratitude. By choosing to spare the king's life, David demonstrated the loyalty and respect of a devoted son honoring his father [אלשיך, אברבנאל].

In response, David offers reassurance, clearly referring to Saul as his lord and king. This direct affirmation calms Saul's concerns, making it clear that his fundamental loyalty remains intact. He still views Saul as his master and sovereign. The only reason he previously spoke as an outsider, distancing himself from the role of a loyal servant, was because Saul himself had rejected him, relentlessly hunted him, and pushed him away [אלשיך].
