ישעיהו, פרק ב׳, פסוק ט״ו

Isaiah 2:15Sefaria

וְעַ֖ל כׇּל־מִגְדָּ֣ל גָּבֹ֑הַּ וְעַ֖ל כׇּל־חוֹמָ֥ה בְצוּרָֽה׃

People often seek safety in the physical structures they build, placing their faith in stone and mortar rather than in God. False confidence in human-made fortifications and centers of power stands at the core of this prophetic warning.

Massive towers represent the ultimate fortified structures. They serve a dual purpose, providing a secure hiding place from enemies while offering a strategic vantage point for archers. Because of these tactical advantages, a tower is viewed as a much stronger and more formidable defense than a standard fortified wall [מלבי״ם]. Yet, the focus on these high structures goes beyond the physical architecture itself. It points directly to the mindset of the people who rely entirely on the sheer strength of these fortresses for their survival [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

There is a distinct hierarchy in this misplaced trust. Those who depend merely on city walls display a lesser degree of false confidence compared to those who feel completely invincible inside their towering fortresses [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this peak of human fortification can be understood specifically as the royal palace, the very center of earthly authority and political might [אבן עזרא].

Ultimately, all these monumental expressions of human strength will be stripped of their value. The massive defenses that people trust so deeply are destined to lose all meaning, eventually being reduced to nothing more than fragile toys [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
