ישעיהו, פרק ל״ו, פסוק כ״ב

Isaiah 36:22Sefaria

וַיָּבֹ֣א אֶלְיָקִ֣ים בֶּן־חִלְקִיָּ֣הוּ אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַ֠בַּ֠יִת וְשֶׁבְנָ֨א הַסֹּפֵ֜ר וְיוֹאָ֨ח בֶּן־אָסָ֧ף הַמַּזְכִּ֛יר אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ קְרוּעֵ֣י בְגָדִ֑ים וַיַּגִּ֣ידוּ ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת דִּבְרֵ֥י רַבְשָׁקֵֽה׃ {ס}

The king's ministers return to Hezekiah carrying a harsh and devastating message from the Assyrian enemy. Their outward appearance and emotional state mirror the profound crisis at hand, as they arrive bewildered and carrying a heavy burden of shame. The defining feature of their return is their torn clothing, a powerful action reflecting a deep sense of brokenness that prompts different explanations regarding its exact cause.

The primary approach among commentators is that this act stemmed from profound religious shock. The ministers tore their garments because they heard the enemy representative voice severe blasphemy and disrespect toward God. His words attacked both the dignity of the king and the honor of Heaven, as he dared to compare the God of Israel to the lifeless idols of surrounding nations, treating Him as just another local deity [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Alternatively, this expression of grief is understood through a national lens, serving as a reaction of mourning over a hopeless political and military reality. The ministers recognized that salvation was distant and the enemy was overwhelmingly powerful. They internalized that the Assyrians were no longer interested in a ransom of silver and gold; rather, they demanded the total surrender of Jerusalem and the exile of its people to a foreign land. Following this view, the ministers maintained their composure in public, choosing not to tear their clothes in front of the enemy or the local citizens. Instead, they waited until they were on their way back, tearing their garments just before entering the king's presence [שד״ל].
