וּפְדוּיֵ֨י יְהֹוָ֜ה יְשׁוּב֗וּן וּבָ֤אוּ צִיּוֹן֙ בְּרִנָּ֔ה וְשִׂמְחַ֥ת עוֹלָ֖ם עַל־רֹאשָׁ֑ם שָׂשׂ֤וֹן וְשִׂמְחָה֙ יַשִּׂיג֔וּן נָ֖סוּ יָג֥וֹן וַאֲנָחָֽה׃ {ס}

The ultimate redemption unfolds as a grand homecoming, marked by eternal joy and a complete reversal of the painful reality of exile. This vision serves as the conclusion to a heartfelt prayer [מצודת דוד]. Following an earlier plea for God to awaken His might, the prayer is offered with the specific hope that it will lead directly to the return of the scattered people [רש"י, אבן עזרא, שד"ל]. A direct parallel is drawn to the miracles of antiquity. Just as God redeemed the Israelites long ago and led them safely through the Red Sea, He will once again bring back those who have been cast out [רד"ק].

This gathering of God's ransomed people [ביאור שטיינזלץ] is an act of pure Divine grace, granted even if they have not earned it through their own actions [מלבי"ם]. Originally directed at those returning from the Babylonian exile, the promise speaks of a complete and final redemption. Once they return, the people will never face exile again [מצודת דוד].

As they make their way back to Zion, they are crowned with boundless, eternal joy [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This image of joy resting upon their heads serves as a metaphor for their restored dignity. They will walk upright, holding their heads high with pride and happiness [רד"ק]. In this new reality, happiness is not merely an emotion they experience, but an active force. Gladness and joy will chase after the returning exiles and overtake them. As a direct result, all sorrow, pain, and sighing will be forced to flee, vanishing from their presence completely [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
