Isaiah 63:8Sefaria

The foundation of the relationship between God and the Israelites was forged during the Exodus, marking a moment of absolute certainty and truth in their bond At that time, God lifted the Israelites out from among another nation and chose them to be His own forever, making them worthy of His profound mercy The connection, however, goes far beyond a divine selection. The relationship is elevated from that of a chosen group to that of a family. While being a "people" implies a closeness born of a specific choice, being "children" represents a higher, natural, and unbreakable connection, much like the inherent tie between a father and his children. This essential bond is what makes them deserving of extraordinary kindness and miracles [מלבי״ם].

With such a close relationship comes a natural expectation of loyalty. God anticipates that His children will remain faithful, never betraying or abandoning Him, standing in stark contrast to a deceitful generation This expectation introduces a complex question regarding God's foresight: how could He expect unwavering loyalty when He already knew the future mistakes the Israelites would make? One approach suggests that the narrative speaks in human terms, portraying God as a father who naturally hopes and expects the best from His children [אבן עזרא]. Another perspective focuses on gratitude, explaining that after experiencing the immense good and salvation God provided, it was only fitting that the Israelites recognize His kindness and remain true to Him [מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. A contrasting view highlights God's profound grace, noting that even though He clearly saw they would eventually stray, He consciously chose to treat them in that very moment as loyal, faithful children [רש״י].

Driven by this deep love and the hopeful expectation of their loyalty, God stepped in to become their constant and eternal savior [
