The sudden collapse of a mighty military power is captured through the terrifying image of a bird of prey swooping down on its target. Such an overwhelming attack strips even the bravest warriors of their courage. The primary approach among commentators is that the imagery of an eagle points to an enemy force preparing to strike the nation of Edom. This invading army will arrive with blinding speed. Taking flight and soaring through the air [מצודת ציון, רד״ק], the attacker will descend upon its target before the defenders can even react [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

The main target of this swift assault is Bozrah, a massive, heavily fortified city [מצודת דוד] that serves as the capital and absolute center of the Edomite kingdom [מלבי״ם]. Beyond the immediate historical events, there is a deeper prophetic layer pointing to the end of days. In this context, Bozrah serves as a symbol for Rome and its allies, representing Edom. This points toward the ultimate conflict of Gog and Magog, where the forces of Edom and Ishmael will clash.
