A nation's sense of invincibility often stems from a dangerous blend of physical power and geographic security. The nation of Edom is defined by an inflated sense of confidence and deep arrogance, believing itself to be entirely untouchable. However, this self-assurance is a hollow illusion, as God ultimately shatters their pride and brings them down from their greatest heights.
The root of Edom's downfall lies in a corrupting force that deeply deceives them. Commentators offer several perspectives on what exactly fuels this fatal flaw. Some explain that it is the sheer terror and fear Edom strikes into neighboring nations through its military successes Others suggest the root cause is the horrific idols that the nation worships Additional views link this flaw to Edom's frantic haste to harm their brother Jacob [רש״י], or simply to their overall foolishness [רד״ק].
Whatever its exact nature, this force acts as a seducer, deceiving the nation much like the serpent in the Garden of Eden This deception, combined with the deep malice in their hearts, causes Edom to become excessively proud, deny core principles of faith, and rest in a completely false sense of security
This feeling of immunity is heavily reinforced by Edom's physical location. The nation resides high up in the crevices of rocks and on mountain peaks, such as Mount Seir or the city of Petra. Living in these natural fortresses makes them feel entirely secure and impossible to conquer
Yet, this geographic fortification will provide no protection. Even if Edom were to build its nest higher than the eagles, God will bring them crashing down to earth and deliver them into the hands of their enemies In fact, God intentionally allows Edom to reach such towering heights. By letting them rise so high, God ensures that when their final judgment arrives at the end of days, their fall will be far more painful and absolute, leaving the nation in a state of eternal ruin [מלבי״ם].
