The ultimate downfall of the Edomite nation, descending from their forefather Esau [ביאור שטיינזלץ], reaches its climax when God removes all their protection and leaves them completely vulnerable. The intensity of this exposure is absolute [מצודת דוד]. It involves a deliberate dismantling of their security, akin to peeling the bark off a tree to leave the wood bare. God strips away the physical fortresses and defenses meant to shield them, while simultaneously uncovering their deepest secrets and most secure hiding places [מלבי״ם, רש״י, מצודת ציון].

This devastating vulnerability is an exact, measure-for-measure punishment for their past cruelty. Previously, Edom captured fleeing Israelite refugees and handed them over to their enemies, actively working to ensure that no survivors would remain [רש״י]. In response, God personally exposes Edom's secret locations. Though the people will desperately try to conceal themselves, their efforts will completely fail [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. The final result of this divine exposure is absolute ruin. The entire nation will be plundered, their wealth and crops will be lost, and no one will be left to survive [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
