The absolute destruction of the great city will be defined by a desperate, bloody struggle within its very walls. The inevitability of this downfall is understood in different ways. It is seen by some as a direct oath sworn by God, sealing the city's fate [רש"י]. Others explain that the intense nature of the battle is a direct result of the city's own prestige. Because of its high status and pride, the residents will stubbornly refuse to flee, choosing instead to defend their home to the last drop of blood [מצודת דוד].

This fierce dedication dictates exactly where the tragedy will unfold. The decisive defeat will not take place on an open battlefield outside the walls. Rather, the young men and defenders will fight and fall directly within the city streets and public squares [מלבי"ם]. Ultimately, the defending army will be completely wiped out. The destruction of these warriors brings a haunting finality to the conflict. Once the violent struggle ends, the ruined city will be left entirely still, reduced to a heavy, absolute silence where no voice is ever heard again [רש"י].
