Job 18:12Sefaria

A sudden and devastating collapse can strip away everything a person holds dear, leaving them exposed to extreme deprivation. A dark picture emerges of a looming disaster that threatens to strike either a person's innermost family circle or their very own body and mind.

The primary approach among commentators understands the initial threat as a strike against the family. In this view, severe hunger and crushing poverty will fall upon the person's children, who represent their core strength and legacy Taking a different path, other scholars interpret the threat as an emotional state of deep sorrow and mourning. Through a dark irony, the individual is described as being hungry for pain, meaning they will actually be entirely filled and consumed by endless suffering A third perspective focuses on the physical and material toll, suggesting that the person's physical strength will waste away, or that they will plummet from a life of wealth and comfort into absolute destitution

The impending ruin is further described as a disaster prepared and waiting to strike. Continuing the focus on the family unit, one group of commentators links this lurking tragedy directly to the person's wife, drawing on the biblical imagery of the first woman being formed from man's rib. Consequently, the prepared disaster is specifically aimed at her It is suggested that this serves as a targeted punishment for past gluttony and excessive feasting, though this raises the difficult question of why the wife should bear the punishment if she did not commit the sin herself [אלשיך]. Conversely, another viewpoint reads the impending threat quite literally. Rather than targeting a family member, the disaster lies in wait right at the person's own side, ready to trip them up and bring about their total destruction
