איוב, פרק כ״ז, פסוק ט׳

Job 27:9Sefaria

הֲֽ֭צַעֲקָתוֹ יִשְׁמַ֥ע ׀ אֵ֑ל כִּֽי־תָב֖וֹא עָלָ֣יו צָרָֽה׃

Times of intense crisis naturally test the bond between a person and their Creator. When sudden distress strikes, even those who have lived wickedly often turn to God in prayer. The central question is whether God will actually listen to the cries of a wicked person during their moments of trouble [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that the answer is negative, though they offer different perspectives on why this disconnect exists. One view suggests that the sheer volume of a wicked person's sins acts as a barrier, actively blocking their prayers from being accepted [תקות אנוש]. Another perspective points to a deep flaw within the character of the wicked. Because their lives are defined by hypocrisy and insincerity, they naturally distance themselves from God. Such deceitful individuals are inherently unable to stand before the Divine Presence [אלשיך].

Looking at how God manages the world, the very expectation that a wicked person should be saved seems illogical. It is unreasonable to expect God to overturn the laws of nature and perform a miracle merely to rescue a wicked individual from physical danger. This is especially true considering that God sometimes chooses not to alter nature even for a completely righteous and sinless person [מצודת דוד].

Within the broader context of the debates in the Book of Job, these ideas reflect the harsh arguments directed at Job by his friends. According to this interpretation, Job is echoing his friends' claims. They argue that God entirely ignores the cries of the wicked due to their sins. Even if a wicked person were to pray daily and attempt to find delight in God, their efforts would ultimately be useless and fail to save their soul [תקות אנוש].
