Proverbs 12:24Sefaria

יַד־חָרוּצִ֥ים תִּמְשׁ֑וֹל וּ֝רְמִיָּ֗ה תִּהְיֶ֥ה לָמַֽס׃

Hard work, persistence, and honesty naturally elevate a person to a position of influence, while cutting corners and laziness inevitably lead to a life of dependence and lowliness. The contrast between these paths highlights the natural consequences of honest labor compared to the attempt to gain profit through crooked means.

The primary approach among commentators is that those who succeed are quick, energetic individuals who work persistently for their livelihood. They stand as the complete opposite of the lazy and deceitful. Others view these successful individuals as deeply honest people whose actions strictly follow what is right and just [רש״י, רלב״ג]. An additional perspective suggests they are people who are constantly in motion, toiling for their keep, or even those who already possess wealth, as their defining trait is likened to gold [אבן עזרא]. Because of the high quality of their work and their boundless energy, they naturally rise to power. They are destined to become wealthy [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ], and through this financial success, they achieve greatness and ultimately govern those who lack such drive [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי].

On the other hand, a path of deceit is taken by lazy individuals who rely on fraud to secure their basic needs [רלב״ג], or by those who build their income on lies. Interestingly, even if someone is naturally hardworking but conducts their business dishonestly, they will inevitably regress rather than move forward [אמרי דעת].

The ultimate fate of this dishonest path is a complete collapse, understood in two main ways. The first is a literal melting away; fake efforts and profits gained through fraud simply dissolve and go to waste [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The second outcome is a descent into servitude. The deceitful and the lazy become so poor and weak that they are forced into a state similar to slavery, paying taxes to the hardworking masters who now rule over them [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי]. This happens because society naturally distances itself from liars, refusing to do business with them, and because they face direct punishment from God [עמנואל הרומי]. Furthermore, when sharp, hardworking people are in charge, they use their wisdom to expose the lies of the dishonest, ensuring that the deceit completely dissolves [אלשיך].

Beyond the material world, this dynamic applies to the inner, spiritual pursuit of wisdom. A person who is quick and dedicated to seeking wisdom purely for its own sake will find that their mind grows strong, ultimately ruling over their physical body and its desires. However, someone who pursues wisdom for the wrong reasons, simply to show off or mislead others, will find their intellect weakened. They will end up enslaved to their own body and material cravings [עמנואל הרומי].
