True wisdom is measured not only by the amount of knowledge a person possesses but by their ability to manage that information and control their speech. A sensible and calculated individual naturally gathers understanding [שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא]. However, rather than broadcasting this clarity and deep investigation, such a person chooses to keep it private [מלבי״ם]. In a poetic sense, this knowledge is kept so close that it acts as a garment, wrapping the individual in quiet understanding [עמנואל הרומי].
There are several motivations behind this quiet approach to wisdom. For some, it is a matter of deep modesty; a person who humbly hides their intelligence will certainly be careful to hide any foolishness [רש״י]. For others, it is a matter of caution. A careful thinker waits until they are absolutely certain of their conclusions, protecting themselves from the embarrassment of making a public mistake [רלב״ג]. Holding wisdom internally also serves a practical purpose, as keeping these thoughts close to the heart ensures they are not forgotten [אבן עזרא]. Furthermore, true wisdom requires selectivity. A thoughtful person does not show off in the streets to impress the masses. Instead, they share profound philosophical truths only in appropriate environments and exclusively with those who are worthy of receiving them [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי].
In sharp contrast stands the fool, a person whose physical desires completely overpower their intellect, blocking them from following the path of wisdom [מלבי״ם]. While the wise carefully guard their words, fools loudly announce their own flaws and shortcomings, feeling absolutely no shame in making their stupidity public [רש״י, רלב״ג, שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. This public display is not always an accident. Because the fool's heart has surrendered to base desires, they often intentionally broadcast doubts and skepticism regarding the laws of wisdom and God's leadership. By publicly questioning these truths, the fool creates a convenient excuse to justify their continued poor behavior and sin [מלבי״ם].
A completely different perspective views the careful individual not as wise, but as cunning and wicked. In this scenario, when a deceitful person commits an intentionally harmful act, they cleverly mask their true motives. They pretend the harmful action was simply an innocent mistake caused by a lack of knowledge. Those who lack mental sharpness fall directly into this trap. Believing the deceiver's lies, they dismiss the malicious act as mere foolishness, entirely unaware of the wicked intent hidden beneath the surface [אלשיך].
