Proverbs 21:26Sefaria

כׇּל־הַ֭יּוֹם הִתְאַוָּ֣ה תַאֲוָ֑ה וְצַדִּ֥יק יִ֝תֵּ֗ן וְלֹ֣א יַחְשֹֽׂךְ׃

A profound contrast exists in human nature between empty longing and concrete action. While one person might spend his days consumed by idle dreams, another actively shapes reality through initiative and generosity. The lazy individual is defined by a constant state of craving. He is full of wishes and deeply wants to satisfy his needs, yet he refuses to invest the necessary effort to achieve his goals [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He remains trapped in a cycle of wanting without doing.

Standing in sharp contrast is the righteous person, whose defining trait is a continuous flow of action. He never holds back his goodness. The primary approach among commentators is that the righteous person actually directs his extraordinary generosity toward the lazy individual. Even though the lazy person is entirely responsible for his own miserable situation due to his refusal to work, the righteous person repeatedly shares his wealth with him and does not withhold his gifts [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This dynamic reveals a deep psychological truth about the trait of giving. There is a fundamental difference between wanting to be generous and actually being generous. Someone might feel a strong desire to give but fail to act on it, leaving him with nothing but an unfulfilled wish. The righteous person, however, takes the first step and gives. By doing so, he trains himself in the habit of generosity, making it incredibly easy for him to continue giving time and time again without any hesitation [אלשיך].

Other perspectives offer a different understanding of the righteous person's actions. Rather than focusing on charity, his actions can be seen as an expression of personal diligence. While the lazy person merely wishes for things, the righteous person puts in the hard work and effort required to gain wisdom and master a trade, never holding back from productive labor [רלב״ג]. Alternatively, his giving is focused closer to home. He provides fully for all the needs of his household, doing so with complete trust that God is the source of all wealth and that He will supply him with all the abundance necessary to sustain his family [רש״י].
