Proverbs 21:7Sefaria

שֹׁד־רְשָׁעִ֥ים יְגוֹרֵ֑ם כִּ֥י מֵ֝אֲנ֗וּ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

The evil actions of the wicked do not simply vanish once the deed is done. Instead, they transform into an active force that haunts them and shapes their destiny. A stubborn refusal to act with honesty and justice creates a reality where the sin itself becomes the very source of their suffering.

The primary approach among commentators is to view this destructive force as literal robbery, oppression, or wealth gained through dishonest means. However, another perspective sees it as the inevitable ruin and destruction that awaits the wicked as a direct punishment for their actions [מלבי״ם]. A unique, conceptual approach understands this destruction as the theft of correct ideas and honest thoughts. Because the wicked refuse to examine reality through the lens of justice, they are led astray by false assumptions. This prevents them from reaching the truth and causes them to make profound mistakes in every area of their lives [רלב״ג].

This ongoing cycle of wrongdoing affects the wicked in several ways. The primary approach among commentators is that the theft itself, or the ruin waiting for them, fills them with deep fear and terror [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. This dread arises because their own hearts predict the future punishment for choosing violence and oppression [מלבי״ם]. The very act of sinning plants anxiety inside the person committing it [מלבי״ם], and their fear is further fueled by a stubborn refusal to return what they stole, leaving them constantly worried about the consequences [מצודת דוד].

In contrast to the idea of fear, other commentators explain that the sin becomes a permanent resident in the lives of the wicked. Evil takes such complete control over them that they actually lose sleep if they are not actively robbing or harming others [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. A third perspective suggests a more final outcome, explaining that their acts of robbery will ultimately drag the wicked to their doom and wipe them from the world [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

The root cause of all this suffering is a conscious choice. The wicked willingly choose wealth gained through crooked paths and completely ignore the practice of justice. This deliberate decision pushes them away from God [אלשיך] and leaves them trapped in an endless cycle of fear, destruction, and lies.
