תהלים, פרק נ׳, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 50:9Sefaria

לֹא־אֶקַּ֣ח מִבֵּיתְךָ֣ פָ֑ר מִ֝מִּכְלְאֹתֶ֗יךָ עַתּוּדִֽים׃

The act of offering a sacrifice can easily be misunderstood as a transaction, a way to provide for the Creator. However, the sacrificial system was never intended to satisfy a divine need. The notion that a person can give God something from their own private property is fundamentally flawed. God makes it clear that He has no need to take these offerings for Himself [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ], nor does He derive any physical pleasure from them [אלשיך]. Furthermore, even if God did require burnt offerings, He would certainly not need to take them from humanity, as absolutely everything in existence is already His and under His exclusive ownership [רש״י, רד״ק].

God never commanded the bringing of sacrifices with the intention of taking them for His own use [מצודת דוד]. In fact, taking domesticated animals from a person's private domain carries a distinct risk. It can easily create a false illusion within the human mind that God somehow depends on them or needs their contribution [אלשיך].

To vividly illustrate this point, the imagery focuses on the largest and most valuable animals brought to the altar, such as the massive bulls of the herd and the mature male he-goats of the flock [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These prized animals are depicted as being taken from fenced areas and sheepfolds where they are securely penned and guarded [מצודת ציון, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רש״י]. Highlighting these large, carefully kept animals reinforces the core message: no matter how valuable or securely guarded a possession might be in the eyes of its human owner, offering it to God is not a transfer of wealth to a Creator who requires it.
