פרשת ראה

Deuteronomy 14:17Sefaria

וְהַקָּאָ֥ת וְאֶֽת־הָרָחָ֖מָה וְאֶת־הַשָּׁלָֽךְ׃

The list of prohibited birds goes beyond a simple biological record. According to tradition, these creatures carry hidden symbols and subtle clues about the future process of redemption and divine mercy.

The first bird in this sequence is generally identified as a bird of prey [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Beyond its physical traits, its identity carries a deeper mystical meaning related to the act of expelling. This points to a future time when the forces of impurity will become completely full. Unable to contain any more, they will be forced to expel all the sparks of holiness they have consumed over time. This dramatic release will mark the very beginning of the redemption process [נחל קדומים].

Following this is a small scavenger bird [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The behavior of this creature acts as a sign for both natural and spiritual events. When it perches on a roof, it signals coming rain, showing that God is having mercy on His world. When it stands on the ground and whistles, it announces that redemption is drawing near [אדרת אליהו]. Commentators agree that the creature's name is rooted in the concept of mercy. Its feminine form explicitly hints at redemption [אדרת אליהו], representing the great wave of divine compassion that will flood the world immediately after the holy sparks are freed [נחל קדומים].

The third creature is a coastal bird known for pulling fish from the sea, an identification agreed upon by most commentators [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אדרת אליהו, ברכת אשר על התורה]. On a hidden, spiritual level, its presence hints at the final casting away of all impurity from the world as the redemption takes hold [נחל קדומים].

The specific order of these creatures is highly intentional. The coastal bird appears immediately after the bird of mercy to convey a profound message about the era just before redemption. Tradition teaches that this period will be marked by severe hardship and lack, to the point that not even a single fish will be available to help heal a sick person. Because the second bird symbolizes the arrival of redemption, the fish-eating bird is placed right after it. This placement promises that when redemption finally arrives, even a creature whose survival depends entirely on catching fish will find comfort and abundant food [אדרת אליהו].
