פרשת וארא

Exodus 6:27Sefaria

After tracing the family lineage of the tribe of Levi, the narrative focuses on the exact identities of the two brothers chosen to confront the king of Egypt. This conclusion highlights their unique qualities, their fitness for the role, and the specific nature of their mission. These two men were uniquely worthy to stand before Pharaoh and command his attention [ספורנו, קאסוטו]. Their actions represent a direct continuation of the prior divine instruction, confirming that the very same individuals who received the command from God were the ones who faithfully carried it out [רש״י, מזרחי, גור אריה]. Furthermore, they maintained a remarkable consistency in their character. Just as they stood with complete humility when receiving their orders from God, they remained entirely humble and free of pride when standing as messengers before a human king [משכיל לדוד].

Although later events often portray Moses speaking alone, Aaron was actually a constant participant in all these conversations [אור החיים]. Within this dynamic, Moses served as the primary leader, while Aaron functioned as a supportive partner joined to his side [מלבי״ם].

The order of their names also shifts significantly at this stage. While earlier family records list Aaron first, the focus here places Moses ahead of his older brother. The primary approach among commentators is that when tracing family history, Aaron takes precedence as the firstborn. However, once the actual mission to Pharaoh begins, Moses takes the lead due to his immense spiritual greatness, his unique role of speaking with God face to face, and his position as the active leader of the mission. Alternatively, Moses takes precedence at this moment because Pharaoh already knew and respected him as a man of great wisdom from years past, whereas Aaron was unfamiliar to the king [העמק דבר]. A different perspective suggests that the alternating order of their names throughout the account proves the two brothers were entirely equal [אור החיים].

Even as two distinct individuals, they operated so seamlessly that they functioned as a single, unified body [אור החיים]. This unified presentation firmly closes the genealogical record and confirms their exact identities [ביאור יש״ר]. Ultimately, this shared identity reflects a deep, unwavering stability. From the very beginning of their journey to its conclusion, they maintained the exact same level of righteousness and dedication to their mission, never wavering or changing course [רש״י, מזרחי, גור אריה].
