Exodus 6:7Sefaria

The ultimate purpose of the Exodus extends far beyond mere physical liberation. It represents the forging of a unique national and spiritual bond between God and the Israelites, a relationship designed to foster a profound recognition of the Divine presence in the world and throughout history.

The primary approach among commentators is that God's promise to take the people as His own refers to the revelation at Mount Sinai and the receiving of the Torah This chosen status fundamentally alters the essence of the Israelites. They transition into servants of God, an existence infinitely superior to being enslaved by a mortal human like Pharaoh, which ultimately allows them to serve God out of genuine free will [בכור שור]. The formation of this nation is an anomaly in human history. The Israelites do not develop through the natural progression of other nations [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead, God Himself establishes them as an independent people without relying on a geographic land or a political state. Their entire social structure is intended to be a living revelation of the Divine spirit, distinguishing Judaism from conventional religions that restrict their focus to temples and rituals [רש״ר הירש]. From a legal and spiritual perspective, being taken by God grants the Israelites the status of consecrated property. This designation automatically nullifies their legal subjugation to Pharaoh, provided they maintain their holiness and distance themselves from impurity [חתם סופר]. Consequently, their destiny is to serve as leaders in God's kingdom on earth, living under His direct providence [העמק דבר].

The subsequent promise of knowing God marks an ascent to a supreme spiritual level characterized by deep devotion, individual providence, and clear awareness This profound knowledge stands in direct contrast to Pharaoh, who arrogantly declared that he did not know God [קאסוטו]. While the earlier stages of redemption rescued the physical body from slavery, this stage redeems the soul from the spiritual impurity of Egypt. Just as a blind man released from prison can only comprehend the severity of his former darkness once his eyes are opened to the light, the Israelites can only truly recognize God's greatness after entering His domain Furthermore, the Divine identity is understood here not merely as a pronoun, but as a specific name denoting God as the active, intervening ruler of creation. He alters the laws of nature at will, disproving the flawed philosophy that the Creator abandoned the world to run on its own [הכתב והקבלה]. This profound level of awareness is considered a fifth degree of redemption, an elevated spiritual tier destined for individuals of high spiritual standing rather than a requirement for the general masses [העמק דבר].

Although the physical departure from Egypt had not yet occurred, the Divine promise of liberation is framed as an already completed action. This serves as a guarantee that when the liberation happens, it will be executed with such undeniable clarity that the people will know with absolute certainty that God was the one who delivered them The repetition of the physical liberation from slavery, despite being mentioned earlier, underscores that for the suffering people, physical freedom remained their most immediate and pressing need This extraction shatters the natural laws of astrology. According to the celestial order, the Israelites were destined to remain in exile. However, God nullified these astrological decrees through open miracles, demonstrating to all nations that He actively performs new wonders in the world

The greatest wonder within this entire process is the dramatic transformation of the people themselves. Individuals who were deeply sunk in the physical toil of mortar and bricks managed to elevate themselves to an extraordinary level of Divine knowledge, exchanging the crushing burdens of Egypt for the spiritual yoke of heaven Through this journey, they learned a fundamental truth: as human beings, they will inevitably face burdens in life. Yet, as long as they remain faithful to God, He will always be there to help carry the weight [רש״ר הירש]. Ultimately, this process yields a dual benefit, saving the Israelites while simultaneously making God's name known and revered throughout the world [חומת אנך].
