Ezekiel 13:5Sefaria

The essential duty of a nation's guides is to serve as both a spiritual and physical shield for their people. Yet, in a time of profound vulnerability, these protectors completely betrayed their responsibility and abandoned the nation. There are different perspectives on exactly who bears the blame for this betrayal. Some point directly to the false and corrupt prophets who misled the masses Others argue that the severe rebuke targets the political leaders and royalty of Israel, men who possessed the authority to protest the moral decay and halt the downward spiral but chose to remain silent [רד״ק].

The situation is compared to a city left defenseless by a crumbling, broken wall, representing the fragile spiritual state of the society. Rather than stepping into the gaps to defend the city, the leaders failed entirely. They did not perform the good deeds necessary to hold back the impending disaster [רש״י, חומת אנך], nor did they stand in prayer to advocate for their generation and stop the coming tragedy [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. They also made no effort to rebuild the defenses. They refused to correct the people, guide them toward repentance, or repair the moral fractures of their time

True heroes and authentic prophets rush to the broken sections of a wall to fight off the enemy and protect the city. In stark contrast, these corrupt figures behaved like opportunistic foxes. Rather than confronting the danger and sounding the alarm as their duty required, they fled through the gaps the moment the enemy approached. Worse still, they took advantage of the people's weakness and the surrounding ruins, using the destruction to advance their own personal interests

The ultimate purpose of standing in the breach and repairing the wall was to prepare the nation to survive the day of God. This day is marked by divine anger and judgment, a time when God brings retribution for accumulated sins Had these leaders fulfilled their roles by building a protective barrier of repentance and good deeds, that collective merit would have served as a shield for Israel. It would have allowed them to withstand the battle and prevented the enemy from conquering them
