Ezekiel 46:20Sefaria

The vision of the future Temple reveals a careful architectural design meant to protect the boundaries of holiness. Deep within the complex, a dedicated, enclosed space serves as a private kitchen for the priests. Here, they prepare the most holy sacrifices, specifically the guilt and sin offerings, as well as the baked grain offerings, which share this highest level of sanctity [מצודת ציון, רד״ק].

The specific location of this kitchen is highly intentional, designed to keep these sacred items from ever leaving their proper place. If the most holy sacrifices are taken outside their defined borders, they are immediately ruined and rendered invalid [רש״י, רד״ק]. To prevent this, the enclosed and separate space acts as a physical barrier and a constant reminder to the priests. If they were to cook in the open main courtyard, they might easily forget and accidentally carry the sacred meat into the outer areas meant for the ordinary Israelites [מצודת דוד]. This strict separation is especially clear when compared to sacrifices of lesser holiness, such as the peace offerings, which are safely cooked in the outer courtyard precisely because that area holds a lower level of sanctity [מלבי״ם].

The primary reason for keeping the most holy items hidden away is to avoid improperly transferring their sacred status to the general public. Commentators offer two main ways to understand this boundary. One approach suggests the concern is social mixing and confusion [רש״י, רד״ק]. If the priests were to bring the highest holy offerings into the outer courtyard, it could create the false impression that ordinary Israelites are allowed to eat these restricted sacrifices alongside them [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Another approach views the issue through the lens of physical contact. Taking these items into a common area is like allowing intense holiness to break out of its container and spill into the crowds [מלבי״ם]. Keeping the sacrifices enclosed ensures that the people do not accidentally touch them and become sanctified themselves. If that were to happen, the sudden presence of intense holiness in a public space would force the ordinary people to distance themselves and leave the area entirely [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
