יחזקאל, פרק מ״ז, פסוק י״ב

Ezekiel 47:12Sefaria

וְעַל־הַנַּ֣חַל יַעֲלֶ֣ה עַל־שְׂפָת֣וֹ מִזֶּ֣ה ׀ וּמִזֶּ֣ה ׀ כׇּל־עֵֽץ־מַ֠אֲכָ֠ל לֹא־יִבּ֨וֹל עָלֵ֜הוּ וְלֹֽא־יִתֹּ֣ם פִּרְי֗וֹ לׇחֳדָשָׁיו֙ יְבַכֵּ֔ר כִּ֣י מֵימָ֔יו מִן־הַמִּקְדָּ֖שׁ הֵ֣מָּה יוֹצְאִ֑ים (והיו) [וְהָיָ֤ה] פִרְיוֹ֙ לְמַאֲכָ֔ל וְעָלֵ֖הוּ לִתְרוּפָֽה׃ {פ}

A miraculous vision unfolds as a stream flowing directly from the Temple transforms its surroundings, granting supernatural qualities to the natural world. On the banks of this stream, every variety of fruit tree will grow, without a single barren tree among them [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. The commentators agree that this reflects a miraculous reality where nature is no longer bound by its usual laws. The leaves of these trees will never wither or dry out, remaining green and vibrant through both summer heat and winter rain [רד״ק, מצודת ציון].

The fruit itself will never run out. The moment a ripe piece of fruit is picked, a new one will instantly grow in its place [מצודת דוד]. The trees will operate on an incredibly fast cycle, producing a fresh harvest of ripe fruit every single month [רש״י, שטיינזלץ]. All of these wonders are driven by the source of the water. Because the stream flows from the Temple, the inherent holiness of the sanctuary grants the water its supernatural power [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ].

The produce of these trees will serve two distinct purposes. The fruit will be sweet and good to eat, while the leaves will act as powerful medicine. Simply placing a leaf on any wound or broken bone will result in a complete healing [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Beyond ordinary healing, the sages explain that these leaves will possess the miraculous ability to cure the mute, allowing them to speak, and to heal barren women [רש״י, רד״ק].

Beyond the literal meaning, this vision serves as a profound spiritual metaphor for the future state of humanity. The primary approach among commentators is that the trees growing on both sides of the stream represent both the people of Israel and the nations of the world [אברבנאל]. In this allegory, the fruit tree symbolizes a person who achieves long life and success, while the leaves represent the wealth and material possessions that protect them. In the normal course of nature, wealth can easily lead a person away from the right path. However, in the future, these material blessings will act as a cure. Wealth will become a tool to help people achieve spiritual perfection and serve God [מלבי״ם]. The water flowing from the Temple represents the Torah, true faith, and the direct guidance of God. It is through these spiritual waters that humanity will ultimately earn endless abundance, blessing, and lasting health [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].
