Genesis 17:3Sefaria

The establishment of the covenant of circumcision marks a dramatic turning point in Abraham's life, triggering a profound physical and spiritual reaction to the Divine revelation. Overcome by the encounter, Abraham falls to the ground. One perspective attributes this to his physical and spiritual limitations at the time. Unable to withstand the awe of the Divine Presence, Abraham collapsed because he was still uncircumcised [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. While he may have fallen during previous encounters with God, this moment is highlighted to contrast his current state with his future ability to stand upright once circumcised Another layer to this idea suggests that the initial command to circumcise actually gave him the strength to stand, but as God continued to detail the future promises and rewards, his endurance gave out and he fell [אלשיך].

Other commentators view his fall through an emotional lens. It was an act of complete submission, a setting aside of his own importance, and an expression of joyful gratitude for the covenant he was being given Conversely, this physical reaction might have stemmed from anxiety and alarm, born from the sudden realization that he had not yet reached the required perfection in his service to God [העמק דבר]. A third approach explains the fall as a deliberate method of mental preparation. By dropping to the ground, Abraham disconnected from his surroundings to focus entirely on the prophecy and meditate on the profound, unclear messages he had received moments before

As the encounter continues, the nature of the revelation shifts significantly. God interacts with Abraham using a specific Divine title that represents a transition from a relationship built on kindness and goodwill to a strict, binding framework of law and order This is the first time this specific title is used in a personal context with Abraham, signaling a special, miraculous level of personal care that overrides the standard laws of nature typically associated with this aspect of God [מלבי״ם].

The manner of communication also changes. Instead of a brief declaration, God speaks at length, laying out the precise details of the covenant [ביאור יש״ר]. Furthermore, the interaction is framed as a shared dialogue rather than a one-sided message being delivered to him. This highlights a close bond and an elevated partnership, indicating a face-to-face conversation that occurred on an equal footing Ultimately, this revelation was not intended solely for Abraham. God shared these details so that Abraham would pass the tradition forward, instructing his household as he brought them into the covenant of circumcision
