Genesis 29:18Sefaria

Jacob's deep affection for Rachel drives him to propose an extraordinary arrangement: seven years of strenuous labor in exchange for her hand in marriage. This carefully calculated offer reveals a blend of economic necessity, family dynamics, and spiritual foresight. Practically, Jacob arrived penniless and lacked the funds for a standard bridal dowry, forcing him to pay through his own servitude While he might have rightfully expected to marry her without cost due to his righteousness and close family ties, he made the offer out of pure generosity [ביאור יש״ר]. Conversely, Laban likely recognized Jacob's intense love and exploited it to extort a lengthy period of labor The seven-year timeframe was also deeply practical regarding Rachel's age. At the time, she was only about five years old; Jacob set the duration so she would reach twelve, an appropriate age for marriage and starting a family Furthermore, Jacob understood that Laban would not part with such a beautiful daughter for a small amount of work [חזקוני], and he calculated this extended period to compensate both for her beauty and for the social slight of bypassing her older sister [מלבי״ם]. On a spiritual level, Jacob chose this specific number of years out of humility and submission [אור החיים]. Ultimately, his profound love made the grueling labor feel like only a few days, fulfilling his mother's earlier prediction that he would stay with Laban for just a short time

Jacob's distinct preference for Rachel over Leah stemmed from several critical factors. From the moment they met at the well, he recognized her as his heaven-ordained match Additionally, Leah, as the older sister, was historically intended for Esau, the older brother. Jacob feared that marrying Leah would provoke Esau to claim that Jacob had stolen not only his birthright and blessing, but his designated wife as well Jacob also harbored a physical concern regarding Leah’s weak eyes, fearing she might eventually suffer from blindness just as his father Isaac had [ביאור יש״ר]. While it might seem unusual for a profoundly righteous man to place such emphasis on physical beauty, this appreciation served positive, elevated purposes. Her beauty inspired the desire to raise a large family of equally beautiful children, and it brought a natural joy to his heart, as God desires the righteous to find happiness in their lot [רד״ק]. Furthermore, for a dedicated scholar, a beautiful wife serves as a spiritual protection against negative inclinations [אור החיים].

Knowing Laban's deceitful nature intimately, Jacob structured his proposal to act as an airtight legal contract. The primary approach among commentators is that Jacob established three distinct conditions to prevent any possibility of fraud. First, he explicitly named his intended bride so Laban could not substitute a stranger or a maidservant who happened to share the same name. Second, he clarified her parentage to guarantee she was genuinely Laban's child. Finally, he specified her birth order as the younger sister, blocking Laban from simply changing the older sister's name to match. Despite these meticulous precautions, Laban still managed to deceive him. He exploited a linguistic loophole regarding Jacob's description of her as the younger or smaller sister, arguing that the older sister was actually the "smaller" one in physical stature, whereas his younger daughter was tall [רא״ש].
