For King Joash, this loss marks a tragic turning point where he loses his moral compass and falls prey to the manipulations of his nation's officials. Without the presence of Jehoiada, who served as a close advisor and gently guided the king into power, Joash finds himself ruling entirely alone. Stripped of this restraining force, he becomes highly vulnerable to new, destructive influences [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The dramatic act of the officials bowing down to the king can be understood in two distinct ways. On a political level, this was an exaggerated display of respect and a promise of total obedience, driven entirely by flattery. The officers used this praise to manipulate the king, hoping to persuade him to abandon the Temple and embrace idol worship like the surrounding nations [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In contrast, the primary approach among commentators suggests a much deeper betrayal. The bowing was not merely a royal formality but an act of actual idol worship. The officials elevated Joash himself to the status of a demigod, mirroring the customs of neighboring cultures. To justify this, they presented a theological argument based on the laws of the Temple. The law dictates that any unauthorized person who approaches the sacred areas will die. Since Joash successfully hid in the Temple for six years as a child and survived, the officials argued that his miraculous survival proved he possessed a divine nature and was therefore worthy of worship.

Overwhelmed by the immense honor showered upon him, the king accepted their flattering words. As long as his mentor was alive, Joash resisted such influences. However, left to his own devices, he gave in to their incitement. This devastating choice ultimately led him to abandon the Temple entirely and embrace idol worship.
