וַיְהִ֡י כִּקְרֹא֩ מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל אֶת־הַסֵּ֜פֶר וַיִּקְרַ֣ע בְּגָדָ֗יו וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַאֱלֹהִ֥ים אָ֙נִי֙ לְהָמִ֣ית וּֽלְהַחֲי֔וֹת כִּי־זֶה֙ שֹׁלֵ֣חַ אֵלַ֔י לֶאֱסֹ֥ף אִ֖ישׁ מִצָּרַעְתּ֑וֹ כִּ֤י אַךְ־דְּעוּ־נָא֙ וּרְא֔וּ כִּֽי־מִתְאַנֶּ֥ה ה֖וּא לִֽי׃

During a period when Aram held the upper hand and Israel struggled to defend its borders, a diplomatic letter from the king of Aram sparks deep anxiety in the Israelite royal court [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Overcome with immense fear and panic, the king of Israel tears his clothes [מצודת דוד]. He cries out in disbelief, asking if he is God [רש״י]. He recognizes that curing leprosy is not a standard medical procedure. Instead, it requires the divine power to kill and give life, as a leper is considered akin to a dead person, and healing one is equivalent to resurrection [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].

This panicked reaction raises a natural question: why does the king not immediately turn to the prophet Elisha, who possesses the ability to heal the disease? The answer lies in the king's poor spiritual condition. One perspective suggests that due to his wickedness, the king completely lacks faith in the prophet, leading him to assume the Aramean king expects him to perform the healing personally [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. Alternatively, the king might actually know that God performs miracles through His prophet, but he is simply too ashamed to ask for help. He has consistently ignored the prophet's warnings to abandon idol worship, making him reluctant to seek assistance now [רד״ק].

Trapped in this state of helplessness, the king concludes that the request is not medical at all, but entirely political. He believes the king of Aram is merely looking for a pretext or excuse to provoke a conflict [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators notes that since the two nations are currently at peace, the Israelite king understands this impossible demand is a deliberate trap. He fears that once he admits he cannot heal the commander, the king of Aram will accuse him of refusing to help, using this as the perfect excuse to break the peace and launch a new war [רלב״ג, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
