The siege of the enemy city takes a deadly turn, claiming the lives of Israelite soldiers and quietly achieving a hidden, darker goal. The defenders of the city launch an attack, an action that is part of their regular habit to occasionally leave the city gates [מלבי״ם] to engage Joab and the Israelite army in combat [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While the initial account of this clash is brief, it conceals a broader military maneuver that only becomes clear in a later report sent to David. The enemy forces initially advance into the open field, but the Israelites push them back, chasing them all the way to the city wall. In the heat of the pursuit, the Israelite soldiers advance dangerously close to the fortifications. From their high vantage point, the defending archers shoot arrows at the men below. This leads to the death of several of David's loyal servants, men recognized as the heroes of the army [מלבי״ם].

Crucially, Uriah the Hittite is killed during this exchange [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because he falls alongside many other soldiers in the chaos of a standard battle maneuver, his death appears as a normal casualty of war. This masks the reality of the situation, ensuring no one suspects he was deliberately sent to the front lines to die [מלבי״ם].
