שמואל ב, פרק י״א, פסוק ו׳

II Samuel 11:6Sefaria

In an attempt to conceal the consequences of his actions, David initiates a calculated plan to hide Bathsheba's pregnancy. He issues a direct order to his army commander to send Uriah to him [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This command is routed through Joab because Uriah is currently stationed at the battlefront alongside him [מצודת דוד]. The hidden motive behind this summons is to encourage Uriah to return home and sleep with his wife. By doing so, it would create the false impression that Uriah is the father of the unborn child, effectively masking the reality that Bathsheba conceived from David [רש״י, רד״ק].

This strategy carries a complex religious and political dilemma. According to [מלבי״ם], even if Bathsheba had received a conditional divorce from Uriah before he departed for war, Uriah returning home and sleeping with her would retroactively cancel that divorce. Consequently, David's previous action would retroactively become the severe sin of being with a married woman. Despite this heavy spiritual cost, David feels forced to choose this option to prevent a public desecration of God's name and to avoid the danger of a rebellion.

The necessity of this cover-up stems from Bathsheba's family ties. She is the granddaughter of Ahithophel, the king's senior advisor. David realizes that the birth cannot be kept a secret from her family, and discovering the truth would ignite intense anger. This deep-seated grudge is precisely what later drives Ahithophel to join Absalom's rebellion against David. Driven by a heavy fear of these consequences, David is willing to bear the guilt of retroactively voiding the divorce, a sin he did not intend when the original event occurred. Ultimately, however, this desperate plan remains merely an intention, as Uriah does not go down to his house, and the scheme never materializes.
