כִּ֣י יָעַ֗צְתִּי הֵ֠אָסֹ֠ף יֵאָסֵ֨ף עָלֶ֤יךָ כׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מִדָּן֙ וְעַד־בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע כַּח֥וֹל אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַיָּ֖ם לָרֹ֑ב וּפָנֶ֥יךָ הֹלְכִ֖ים בַּקְרָֽב׃

A critical shift in military strategy unfolds as Hushai presents Absalom with an alternative battle plan, completely overturning the strategy previously proposed by Ahithophel. Rather than agreeing with his predecessor, Hushai offers a dramatically different approach [רש"י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His new advice relies on delaying the conflict, gathering a massive army, and demanding personal leadership at the front lines.

Hushai dismantles Ahithophel's plan through three major changes [מלבי"ם]. First, instead of launching an immediate attack, he advises waiting until the people can be gathered. Second, rather than deploying a small, limited force, he demands the mobilization of all Israel. The purpose of this mass recruitment is to guarantee a crushing victory through an overwhelming numerical advantage [מצודת דוד]. Third, instead of allowing an advisor to lead the campaign, Hushai insists that Absalom himself must go out to fight.

The strategy heavily emphasizes Absalom's personal role in the upcoming war [מצודת ציון]. He is told that he must go into battle himself [מצודת ציון, רד"ק]. The idea of his presence leading the way is rooted in the concept that a leader's face represents the active supervision and guidance of the one directing the path [רד"ק]. Absalom is expected to march at the very head of the camp, personally leading his warriors into the fight [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This directly opposes Ahithophel's earlier suggestion to lead the troops himself while leaving Absalom safely behind in Jerusalem. Hushai successfully convinces Absalom that his personal presence on the battlefield is essential. By standing at the front lines, Absalom will ignite a fierce fighting spirit within his soldiers [רד"ק]. Seeing their leader in the thick of the war will inspire the men to perform extraordinary acts of bravery, driven by a deep desire to find favor in his eyes [מצודת דוד].
