II Samuel 20:14Sefaria

A high-stakes chase unfolds across the territories of Israel, tracing the path of a rebellion and the intense pursuit to crush it. The narrative tracks a rapid movement through the tribes, though commentators debate exactly whose journey is being detailed. One approach suggests that the rebel Sheba son of Bichri is the one traveling throughout the land. He moves frantically from tribe to tribe, inciting the masses to rebel against David and crown him instead, all while fleeing his pursuers until he finally seeks refuge in a fortified city A contrasting perspective asserts that the pursuer, Joab son of Zeruiah, is the one moving through the tribes, actively recruiting an army to hunt down the rebel

The chase leads to a fortified city known as Abel. Because there were other towns with this name, it is specifically identified by its proximity to a neighboring location, Beth-maacah, ensuring it stands out from the rest [רד״ק]. Along the way, the journey sweeps through an area associated with the Berim. This refers either to the small settlements surrounding the city of Beeroth within the territory of Benjamin [רלב״ג, רד״ק, שטיינזלץ], or to a broader regional district encompassing numerous towns and a large population [מצודת דוד].

As the journey progresses, masses of people gather and follow along. The identity of the leader they trail depends on who is understood to be leading the march. If Sheba is the focus, these locals flock to his side, joining his uprising against God and David [רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. If Joab is the central figure, the crowds and the people of the Berim region are actually rallying behind him to hunt down the traitor A more complex view suggests a dramatic shift in loyalty. The locals may have originally followed the rebel Sheba, but upon seeing Joab and his advancing army, they changed their minds. Turning against the rebellion, they added their numbers to the pursuing forces, gathering behind Joab to assist in bringing the traitor to justice [רד״ק].
