I Samuel 30:23Sefaria

Faced with the loud and selfish demands of his warriors to keep all the spoils of war for themselves, David responds with softness, humility, and wisdom. He addresses his men as brothers, shifting the focus of the conversation away from personal gain and toward an awareness of God's direct involvement The fighting men argue that because they used their physical strength to recover the property, and because the original owners had already given up hope of retrieving it, the loot rightfully belongs to the victors. David concedes that if their success had relied on natural warfare and physical might, their claim would be entirely justified. However, he explains that the reality of their victory was exactly the opposite [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that David completely rejects the idea that human power won the day, offering three distinct proofs from recent events to show that their triumph was a clear miracle orchestrated by God. First, the recovered wealth is not the result of their own hard work, but a direct gift from God, meaning it does not belong to them exclusively Second, God protected them in a supernatural way throughout the battle. This is evident from the fact that not a single soldier was killed or went missing, a reality that completely defies the normal nature of war Finally, it was God who handed over a massive enemy army, one confident in its overwhelming size, into the hands of a mere four hundred men [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

Because the entire victory was clearly God's doing, the natural conclusion is that all members of the camp are equal as God's people and deserve an equal share of the recovered property [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, if the battle was won through faith and Divine providence rather than physical combat, the merit of the men who stayed behind to guard the supplies is just as great. Their willingness to remain behind, trusting completely that God would save their property without them needing to chase the enemy themselves, is a powerful testament to their deep faith [מלבי״ם].
