שמואל א, פרק ל׳, פסוק כ״ד

I Samuel 30:24Sefaria

וּמִי֙ יִשְׁמַ֣ע לָכֶ֔ם לַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֞י כְּחֵ֣לֶק ׀ הַיֹּרֵ֣ד בַּמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וּֽכְחֵ֛לֶק הַיֹּשֵׁ֥ב עַל־הַכֵּלִ֖ים יַחְדָּ֥ו יַחֲלֹֽקוּ׃ {ס}

In the aftermath of battle, the distribution of captured wealth is not determined solely by physical participation on the front lines. Instead, it rests on the shared effort and mutual dependence of the entire camp. David firmly rejects the frontline fighters' demand to keep all the captured goods for themselves. He clarifies that their claims are completely unacceptable [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead, he establishes a clear rule that the spoils must be divided equally [רד"ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The portion given to one man must be exactly the same as the portion given to another [מצודת ציון].

The primary approach among commentators highlights the practical logic behind this decision. The active warriors cannot attribute the victory solely to their own physical strength and the personal risks they took. Guarding the supplies in the rear is an essential task, since without these guards, the fighters would not have been able to enter the battle free from distraction [מצודת דוד, רלב"ג]. Furthermore, the men who stayed behind did not simply watch over equipment. They actively secured a dangerous pass. Because of this critical role, they certainly deserve an equal share of the rewards alongside the combatants [אברבנאל].

Beyond the tactical considerations, there is a profound spiritual dimension to the division of wealth. The triumph was not achieved through physical might alone, but with the help of God. This divine assistance was granted in the merit of the entire group working together, including both the men who went out to fight and those who remained behind [רלב"ג].

In contrast to this shared view, a unique perspective completely reverses the dynamic between the two groups. According to this approach, the spiritual merit of those who stayed with the supplies is actually greater than that of the frontline fighters. Therefore, the true innovation in David's ruling is not that the guards are granted a share of the spoils. Rather, the surprise is that the active fighters, whose merit is considered lesser, are permitted to share equally with the guards. Ultimately, the victory was achieved specifically because of the merit of those who stayed behind to protect the camp [מלבי"ם].
