Isaiah 2:8Sefaria

A nation's spiritual downfall is often the tragic and direct result of its material abundance. The widespread practice of idolatry is intimately connected to a landscape already overflowing with silver and gold. Out of immense wealth, success, and abundant good, the people became ungrateful and rebelled against God. They used the very abundance He provided to manufacture false gods This historical cycle of wealth leading to spiritual ruin reached its peak during the highly prosperous reign of King Solomon, and later, after his death, when Jeroboam forged golden calves and caused idolatry to multiply across the land [אברבנאל].

The true nature of these false gods is one of absolute nothingness, as they lack any real substance or power [אבן עזרא]. This reality highlights the profound foolishness of humanity. Rather than serving their Creator, people bow down to lifeless statues and images of their own making This devotion is not a fleeting moment, but a continuous, ongoing state of worship [רש״י].

The absurdity of this worship deepens through a progression in how these idols are produced. At first, an individual might bow to an object created under his general authority or commissioned from a hired silversmith [אבן עזרא]. However, the foolishness intensifies when people worship an object crafted intimately by their own fingers. In this ultimate act of senselessness, a person bows to an idol he has shaped and molded entirely by himself, without any middleman [מלבי״ם].
