ישעיהו, פרק ל״ג, פסוק כ״ב

Isaiah 33:22Sefaria

A profound declaration of absolute trust in God's leadership emerges during times of great distress, establishing Him as the sole source of authority and rescue. Instead of trembling before human empires and mortal rulers, the people place their complete reliance on divine protection. Historically, this serves as a promise of deliverance from the mighty king of Assyria. The people are assured that God will take up their cause, judging their enemies and bringing justice for the harm inflicted upon them [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. In this spirit, the fear of human officials is entirely replaced by faith. Rather than dreading mortal judges who demand tribute or scribes who tally up royal tax quotas, the people recognize that God alone truly holds these positions of power [אבן עזרא].

The different roles attributed to God highlight His absolute sovereignty. He is recognized first as the ultimate minister and judge over the people [רש״י]. Furthermore, He acts as the supreme lawgiver. The primary approach among commentators is that this role identifies God as the ruler who establishes the moral, social, and religious laws of society [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, viewing this through the lens of living under foreign oppression, this same role can be seen as replacing the dreaded human scribe appointed to record and collect heavy taxes [אבן עזרא].

Acknowledging God through these various roles naturally leads to the absolute certainty of His salvation. One perspective views this rescue as a basic royal duty. Because God is the true ruler and king, it is only right and fitting that He protects His subjects from their oppressors [מצודת דוד], making Him the genuine source of all security [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this progression of titles outlines a careful spiritual and legal process. Initially, God acts as the strict judge who decrees punishment upon the people for their wrongdoings. However, because He is also the ultimate lawgiver, He possesses the absolute authority to alter those very laws and harsh decrees. Ultimately, as the supreme king, He holds the sovereign power to pardon sins entirely, choosing to act with extraordinary kindness beyond the strict letter of the law to guarantee His people's salvation [מלבי״ם].
