Isaiah 42:5Sefaria

To establish absolute sovereignty and counter the false beliefs of a universe that is eternal, creator-less, or born of chance, God is declared the sole architect of existence He operates through a perfect balance of justice and mercy [רש״י]. The formation of the universe unfolded across two parallel realms. First, the heavens were brought into existence from absolute nothingness [מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. They were initially formed like the warp threads of a loom and then stretched outward [רש״י]. This expansion occurred at a slant, forming a vast canopy akin to a tent pitched over the world below By contrast, the earth was spread out flat and straight Although the globe itself is spherical, God gathered its waters to one place, flattening the dry land to make it habitable, much like a silversmith hammering metal into smooth plates [רד״ק]. Alongside the earth emerged all that grows from it, primarily the rich plant life [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אבן עזרא] and the diverse animal kingdom [ביאור שטיינזלץ, שד״ל].

The heavens and the earth represent profound opposites: the celestial realm is permanent and enduring, while the earthly domain and its offspring are transient and fading. To leave an undeniable signature on the world and prove that a single Creator fashioned both extremes, God combined these two elements within humanity, fusing an earthly body with a heavenly soul [מלבי״ם]. When it comes to animating these creations, commentators offer varying perspectives on how life was distributed. The primary approach suggests a clear distinction between humans and animals. Because humans are the pinnacle of creation, they were granted an intellectual soul and walk upright on the earth, whereas animals received a more basic spirit of life Conversely, another perspective reverses this dynamic, suggesting that the animal kingdom received the basic breath, while humans, distinguished by their upright posture, were granted the higher spirit [שד״ל]. A third, more spiritual approach maintains that the impartation of life refers exclusively to humanity, but in two distinct tiers: a basic breath of life is given equally to all people, while a unique spirit of holiness is reserved for those who actively choose to walk in His paths [רש״י, מלבי״ם].

This grand design of creation serves not only as a record of the past but as a profound guarantee for the future. Because the physical, earthly body has the potential to obscure the light of the heavenly soul, God will eventually raise the Messianic king to bring enlightenment to all of humanity, redeem the Israelites from exile, and correct the misguided beliefs held by the nations [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. In this future era, the Israelites will undergo a redemption so profound that they will become entirely new creations [חומת אנך]. As a holy spirit descends upon them from above, the barriers of negative impulses will be completely removed, allowing the natural, intrinsic purity of their souls to blossom and be revealed to the entire world [אהבת יהונתן].
