Isaiah 66:3Sefaria

True devotion to God requires much more than the mechanical performance of religious rituals; it demands a pure heart and ethical behavior. When a morally corrupt individual attempts to appease his Creator through external ceremonies, the actions are not merely useless, but are considered a direct offense and an abomination. The primary approach among commentators presents a shocking parallel between sacred offerings and severe crimes, illustrating that the sacrifices of the wicked are utterly rejected by God. In this view, a wicked person slaughtering a bull for an offering is viewed as though he is murdering a human being. Sacrificing a lamb is equated to breaking a dog's neck, bringing a meal offering is likened to offering the blood of a detestable pig, and burning incense is compared to bringing a gift born of deceit and theft. The choice of pigs and dogs in this comparison is highly intentional. These animals display certain outward signs of purity while remaining entirely impure on the inside. This perfectly mirrors corrupt individuals who present a righteous, pious exterior by bringing sacrifices, yet remain morally hollow, wrongly believing that religious rituals exempt them from their ethical duties

Human traits can be directed toward either good or evil. A person with naturally violent tendencies can channel that aggression into positive outlets, such as performing proper, kosher slaughter. However, if he fails to control his impulses and surrenders to his darker nature, his act of slaughter is spiritually equated to murder On a deeper spiritual plane, when a person filled with sin approaches the altar, he fails to elevate the physical world. Instead of repairing reality through his offering, he only causes further spiritual damage and corruption [נחל שורק].

In contrast to viewing these comparisons as metaphors, a different perspective suggests a literal, historical reality of mixed worship. Rather than drawing a conceptual parallel, this view describes a society that simultaneously worshipped God and engaged in idolatry. These individuals literally performed both actions side by side: they slaughtered bulls for God while simultaneously murdering people, and they sacrificed lambs to God while also breaking the necks of dogs and offering pig blood to false idols [שד״ל].

Ultimately, the complete rejection of these actions stems from the underlying motivations of the people. These individuals did not act out of a genuine desire to fulfill God's commands. Instead, they made a conscious, emotional, and intellectual choice to continue in their wicked ways and embrace their abominations As a direct result of their choices, a system of measure for measure is set into motion. Just as they actively chose paths of evil and corruption, God will choose to bring harsh punishment and disaster upon them
