ישעיהו, פרק ח׳, פסוק ה׳

Isaiah 8:5Sefaria

וַיֹּ֣סֶף יְהֹוָ֔ה דַּבֵּ֥ר אֵלַ֛י ע֖וֹד לֵאמֹֽר׃

God's ongoing revelation to Isaiah carries a sharp political message for the people of Judah [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. At the time, an internal conspiracy is brewing within the kingdom. A faction of the people wants to rebel, throw off the rule of the House of David, and ally themselves with the king of Israel. God delivers a warning against this uprising, assuring the people that the northern kingdom of Israel will soon be destroyed, while the authority of the House of David will eventually rise again [מלבי״ם].

The divine communication continues to focus on the exact same themes as His previous warnings [רד״ק]. However, there are different perspectives on which specific threat is being emphasized. Some maintain that the focus remains on the immediate danger posed by the neighboring kings of Aram and Israel [מצודת דוד]. Others suggest that the attention shifts toward the looming threat of the Assyrian empire [אבן עזרא].

A broader perspective links these two threats together, explaining that after assuring the people of salvation from their immediate neighbors, God's message transitions to the future rescue from the Assyrian siege. This progression addresses a profound theological question: why would a righteous generation, guided by a devoted king like Hezekiah, be subjected to the trauma of an Assyrian invasion at all? The answer rests on the choices of the people. Many in Judah grew tired of Hezekiah’s humble, quiet leadership—likened to gentle, slow-moving waters—and instead admired the aggressive, forceful rule of the neighboring kings. In a direct, measure-for-measure response, God brings the mighty Assyrian army against them, sweeping over the land like a massive, raging river [אברבנאל].
